Qwest Communications

does not provide the Broadband Census with local internet information (data policy)

Qwest Communications International Inc. had nearly two million broadband subscribers at year-end 2006, according to the Leichtman Research Group. With the acquisition of BellSouth by AT&T Inc., Qwest is now the third-largest of the remaining "Baby Bell" carriers created in the aftermath of the breakup of "Ma Bell," with about 15 million subscribers, the company reported.

Broadband Census Taker says:

Qwest provides the DSL line, Xmission is the actual service provider.

Derek Abrams says:

This is a PREMIUM DSL service.

Broadband Census Taker says:

My home is in a Comcast service hole. LP broadband and Cricket are myh only other options.

PaulWh says:

I used to get closed to the advertised speed but it has been getting slower and slower. These days I can't watch streaming video at all (Hulu/YouTube are unusable) and movie downloads take days. 2wire.net reports my speed as 490.10kbps, less than 10% of the promised speed.

Adam says:

While the connection is stable (main reason i switched from charter), during peak hours speed goes down to around 400kbps down and 600kbps up. This really tightens the total bandwidth that my house uses (3+pcs)

nick gallegos says:

The service is on and off, my modems keep failing and I never have over 1GB down. They keep sending me ads for 4GB or more, but why bother when I can't get about 1 on a 1.5?

Broadband Census Taker says:

Overall very reliable. Can only connect at about 6.550 Meg

Dw says:

Works most of the time, very few issues and they were quickly resolved. The bandwidth is very close to whats advertised.

Zegon says:

I at one time used to get the industry acceptable 80% of advertised speed. I would get this consistantly on "outside" speed test sites such as pcpitstop.com. I mean by outside as those outside the Qwest network. Qwest states that they only guarntee a connection speed (identified through your modem) and not bandwidth. However they always advertise a bps which is bits per second. That is in fact a term associated with bandwidth. Qwest now has their own speed test servers on their own INTRANET network. They say as long as you get 80% on those, they are giving what is expected. Not true! I am paying for a certain speed to the internet, not their intranet. They have their traffic shaping speed throttling going on and controlling the speed at which people are able to connect to the internet. It has become increasingly worse as I expect they keep selling the bandwidth but do nothing to increase their backbone, forcing more people onto the same pipe. Qwest are crooks, and I hope they get their ass taken in a class action lawsuit.

Gantlas says:

Qwest charges quite a bit extra for naked DSL which makes bundling with unnecessary phone service often the cheaper option. Service has met the maximum advertised speed quite often though with how low that speed is it is hardly a big accomplishment

Broadband Census Taker says:

I haven't gotten anywhere close to the maximum speed but at least it's pretty consistent and almost always available.

Broadband Census Taker says:

Usually there is some bandwidth funneling around peak hours, sometimes i can't get more than half the bandwidth im paying for.

User21 says:

Availability 99% of the time, longest period of down/slow time was 24 - 48 hour, once or twice in 3 years.

WINSOX says:

I use Netzero as my ISP - they have not raised/lowered my rate in 3 years & I'm very happy with their service.

Mark says:

Intermittent connection, random disconnects and speed drops (as low as 256/256), central office is over 3mi~ away with no remote terminals in the immediate area.

Broadband Census Taker says:

only can get Dial-up at my house.

Broadband Census Taker says:

Service goes down frequently.

BrianDBlack says:

This is the fastest speed Qwest offers at my address, and it does not keep up with my usage. Multiple speed test websites have verified an ACTUAL speed of around 3 mb/s down and around 500 k/s up. This may be fine for people who just browse the web and check email, but if you use any of the video streaming services like iTunes rentals, Netflix, or others, it does not meet the speeds I require for smooth playback. I would have gone with a Comcast connection of 12mb/2mb, but cost was an issue. I don't believe you should have to pay over $50/month for a decent connection. I would really like to see a municipal fiber option in my area.

May 07, 2010 5:49 pm

Broadband Census Taker says:

Qwest is also offered in my area for DSL.

Aug 11, 2010 10:24 am

Windworker says:

We've purchased a block of static IP addresses, but Qwest refuses to configure forward DNS records for their use to register our domain names.
